Crash Ends in Explosion

ALLSTON, Mass. (WBZ) ― Nine vehicles were damaged in a wild series of crashes in Allston Thursday morning that carried on for several blocks and ended with an explosion and fire.
A source told WBZ the truck driver who started it said he blacked out.
It began just after 7 a.m. when an out-of-control delivery truck heading outbound on Commonwealth Avenue slammed into a pick-up at Babcock Street, knocking it onto the trolley tracks.
The tractor-trailer then slammed into five parked cars and pushed a parked Range Rover nearly a block before the SUV ended up crashing into the window of an insurance company at the intersection of Comm. Ave. and Brighton Avenue.
The truck then collided head-on with an eighth vehicle. That set off a massive explosion and both went up in flames.
Police say three people, including the truck driver, were taken to the hospital with what are believed to be minor injuries.
A hazardous materials team was called in because there were medical supplies on the burning New England Delivery truck. Investigators were concerned about a highly flammable chemical on board called Xylene, a paint thinner that's also a cleaning agent. It did not leak, although fuel from both vehicles spilled at the scene.
New England Delivery, which is based out of Wilmington, had no comment.
Fire department spokesman Steve McDonald said Boston police will now begin an investigation.
Comm. Ave outbound remains closed to traffic in the area.
Green B Line trolley service between Babcock and Blandford Streets was suspended for about three hours. It resumed at 10:30 a.m.

Minnesota officials are releasing video of a Taser incident that ended in the death of a 29-year-old motorist.
Mark Backlund of Fridley had just crashed his minivan on I-694 in the northern Minneapolis suburb of New Brighton in January. Video from a squad car dashcam shows state troopers approaching Backlund's minivan to see if he's OK.
The video appears to show Backlund punching a trooper, as authorities and witnesses say he did. A Taser-mounted camera shows Backlund trying to put his keys in the ignition, and then the Taser being used on him.
The video footage shows Backlund getting out of the van and struggling with troopers who used the Taser two more times before they finally handcuffed him and put him in an ambulance. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
An outside investigation earlier this month cleared the troopers of any misconduct. A medical examiner found that "acute cocaine intoxication" was the main factor in Backlund's death.

A man was taken into custody Wednesday following a dangerous high-speed chase through the South Bay.
Officials said they did not know why the man eluded them, but a CHP officer said he told them he "was scared."
The chase began around 1 p.m. when the man failed to pull over for a traffic stop.
The unidentified 23-year-old, who was driving a blue Chrysler Sebring, began driving dangerously on southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near J Street in Chula Vista, police said. The pursuit then went onto side streets around Dairy Mart Road and Camino De La Plaza.
The driver then re-entered I-5 south, and made an immediate U-turn, and began traveling north in southbound lanes. The CHP stopped following the Sebring, but the police helicopter, ABLE, continued to monitor the pursuit from above.
CHP said at times, the driver reached speeds of 120 mph. The man made a second U-turn and began to exit near Tocayo Avenue in Nestor.
He ran from the car into a nearby apartment complex located in the 1500 block of Oro Vista Road. Authorities found the driver hiding in some bushes around 1:24 p.m. and took him into custody. His name was not released.

Swat team uses rubber bullet during standoff

A 6-hour standoff on Buffalo's Eastside shuts down streets in one neighborhood as police try to talk a man down from the roof.
Holding a knife and yelling out the window, 35-year-old Christopher Wright got into a standoff with police. Fire trucks and squad cars blocked off a section of Zelmer and Doat Streets as negotiators tried to reason with Wright.
Sheila, a neighbor, said "I got up this morning to go to church and they wouldn't allow me to go down Doat Street. And when I got out of church, I thought, my god, what's going on here?"
It started as a domestic incident around 6:30am, which quickly escalated out of control. Buffalo Police spokesman Mike DeGeorge said, "It started to become violent, apparently and that's when the girlfriend and the others left the house."
Wright threw a television out the window and paced around the roof. At one point during the standoff, he took off his shirt showing the cuts he made on his chest. Crews on scene cut off the natural gas to the home so he couldn't blow up the house. After six hours, the SWAT team moved in. They used something called "the rubber bullet" to temporarily incapacitate Wright. His body then flopped out of the window. Fortunately the slanted rood prevented his fall to the ground and police reached out to handcuff him and drag him back inside to safety. Neighbor Sheila said, "Its sad that it had to come to this, but I guess they had to do what they had to do."
Wright's girlfriend stayed on scene to talk to police as the ambulance took him away. Many people who watched this all go down were relieved it ended with no one seriously hurt. Carol, a neighbor, said "There could be several endings, but I'm glad it ended like this."
Wright was taken to ECMC where he is being treated in the emergency room. Buffalo police say there are charges pending against him, which could include weapon possession and menacing.
Man On Golf Cart Trying to Escape Police

May/05/08:Las Vegas,Metro Police were led on a so - called wild goose chase Monday morning in an effort to catch a suspect who tried to steal a Metro bait car.
The suspect lead police on a foot chase then jumped into a golf cart and then walked on Summerlin Parkway.
Action News reporter Ben Deci has more on this wild chase that was caught on tape.
Police say the man tried to steal the bait car and when he started driving down the wrong side of the street, Metro turned off the engine.
That is when Metro says the suspect took off running.
"We would rather chase the guy on the ground, let nobody get injured and shut it down right there," said Lieutenant Robert Duval.
Out on the golf course the suspect tried running over par and stumbled along the way.
Then he got another dumb idea or rather the same dumb idea that got him into the mess in the first place, he stole another set of wheels.
The suspect took a ride on a golf cart.
"When I see the guy take my cart and run and then I saw the helicopter," said Alex Uerrero.
"I heard Alex my partner yelling and he was waving his hands saying go get him, get him," explained John J. Edward.
It was not quite what you call a high speed chase.
Metro took a few minutes to get on scene, but it turned out the Channel 13 Action News Hawk was already tracking the suspect from the air.
When Metro got on scene, Captain Paul helped guide Metro's helicopter to the suspect.
"It was actually the Channel 13 helicopter that helped us out," said Lieutenant Duval.
Once the suspect got in a tunnel underneath the road he tried to make one last attempt to get away.
He ditched the golf cart and hid in a bush off to the side.
But thanks to the golf cart they were able to follow him and he did not stay hidden for very long.
The suspect peeked out from the brush with golf course staff hot on his heels.
"Normally about the biggest thing we get is someone driving too close to green, or on the T or something. Other than that, it is pretty easy going," said Howard.
In the end, the arrest is easy with the suspect so winded from his run, he lays down and let's police put him in custody.
